The fun that comes with spending an afternoon exploring the terrain with your ATV is limitless. However, that all can change in a moment, if you get stuck somewhere in the wilderness. In these cases, it’s best to have another person traveling with you. But, if you do find yourself alone, you need to know some effective ways of freeing your vehicle, without causing too much damage or needing an expensive tow.

Here are a few helpful tips for getting your ATV unstuck!

Use a Winch

One of the first skills you should learn when starting to ride is how to anchor a winch to your ATV vehicle. Usually, smaller winches can be attached to the front or back sections of your ATV. They can then be anchored to another quad or vehicle, in order to tow your stuck ATV to safety!

Pack a Come-Along and Tow Straps

A come-along is a small, usually hand-powered winch device that comes in handy with hauling your stuck ATV out of a ditch. In addition, tow straps are essential in anchoring the come-along to your ATV. Come-alongs are highly portable and can fit in a backpack during your ride outs, making them an extremely convenient and accessible tool!

Bring a Shovel

If you get stuck in a place with no anchor and no way of creating one, your only option may be to dig your way out. This is why it's best to have a foldable shovel in your backpack, when riding. While digging, try to free the tires and help them gain a grip on the ground. You can also easily scoop mud away from the tires to achieve the needed tire traction, in order to speed your ATV out of the mud!
